The Galapogos Islands are an archipelago of islands in the eastern Pacific Ocean, belonging to Ecuador but situated approximately 1,00 km (six hundred twenty miles) west of the mainland of South America. Altogether there are thirteen main islands together with six smaller uninhabited ones, which together take up about 50,000 sq km (nineteen thousand five hundred sq mi). The islands are famous for their amazingly rich assortment of exceptional wildlife and mainly untouched natural environment.
The animal life that the Galapagos Islands are legendary for is genuinely incredible, including scores of indigenous species that are not found elsewhere. A couple of the animal species you can see are Galapogos sea lions, Galapagos penguins, marine iguanas, Galapogos flamingos, giant tortoises, frigatebirds, and loads of others. The animals here are extraordinarily docile, having virtually no fear of humans. This is thought to be a result of the islands’ remoteness, which didn’t give the local animals any motive to acquire the instinct to run away from humans. It is also thought to be because of the lack of any large predator animals on the islands.
The ecosystem of the archipelago is also magnificent. Lovely reefs and countless varieties of exotic fish contribute to some of the most mind-blowing diving and snorkelling places on the planet. Outside of the ocean, the earth is extremely volcanic, making the islands tremendously lush with abundant plant life. The volcanoes themselves offer you no shortage of opportunities to hike and explore, experiencing remarkable panoramas while encountering the volcanic topography up close.
The Galapogos Islands are still firmly regulated to prevent the ruin of the environment and animal life. You can experience an unspoilt paradise and feel a oneness with mother nature that you can’t quite experience anywhere else on Earth.
