Firefighters, also referred to as firemen, are rescuers whose principal responsibility is to extinguish fires, and to save those who are caught in a hazardous situation like a burning building. The training they endure is difficult and extensive, and they are carefully tested for both the power of their minds and of their bodies, so there is no doubt whatsoever that they are capable of performing their responsibilities. Since they courageously put themselves at risk to keep the community safe, they are an exceptionally well-respected profession in most developed countries.

As one of the critical public services in our communities, firefighters closely in tandem with other services responsible for our safety. Fire scenes are usually thought of as crime scenes until the cause of the fire has been exposed, which requires the police to be there and working in consultation with the firefighters. Firefighters also endure training in basic emergency medical aid, and tend to show up at the scenes of accidents before the paramedics’ arrival in order to provide some initial medical care and to assess the situation.

There are a number of essential pillars of being a firefighter that all firemen are well-trained in and take very seriously. Namely, fire prevention, self preservation, rescue, and fire control. “Fire prevention” refers to the creation of regulations and instructions that help avert fires, and letting the public know about the regulations and conducting enforcement. For instance a firefighter’s duty might include the inspection of a building to see whether the fire alarms and sprinklers are functioning properly. Self-preservation is the collection of procedures and equipment that help decrease the danger posed to firefighters in the line of duty. One part of that is the guidelines about firefighters always working in groups and having sufficient equipment to allow them to get out of risky situations. Maybe the most critical rule of self preservation is “two in, two out”, a rule that says that firefighters go into a building in two’s, but only if there is at least one other pair outside waiting to carry out an emergency extraction if their colleagues inside are in immediate danger. Rescue involves the unbelievably intricate procedures that govern the rescue of endangered civilians and other firefighters who are in dangerare in a hazardous situation. “Fire control” involves the putting out of fires by allowing nothing to keep on feeding the fire. To be specific, the firemen make sure that the fire has no oxygen, no fuel, no heat, and no contact with chemicals that could have caused the fire to break out or are further fuelling it. Firefighters have various important tools to help put out fires, for example firehoses, extinguishers, and substances that can neutralize different chemicals.

Firemen, as they are also known, endure far-reaching and ongoing training that involves frequent evaluations and refresher training. They are the embodiment of professionalism and commitment to the community and are worthy of our appreciation and honor.
